Crown Trade Eggshell is a highly durable and washable interior solvent-based eggshell paint offering good flow and adhesion to walls, ceilings or wood. With a high resistance to steam and condensation, it makes it suitable for areas such as bathrooms and kitchens, giving a long lasting, durable finish.
To obtain the best results it is necessary to ensure the project area is structurally sound, clean and dry, free from any poorly adhering material or defects
- Any old, flawed and peeling paint will need to be removed either by sanding or with the use of a paint scraper
- Extra caution needs be taken during the surface preparation of pre-1960s paint surfaces as they may contain harmful quantities of lead
- Any organic growth, such as fungal, mould, algal or lichen growths, with an antifungal solution, such as Sandtex Fungicidal Wash
- Clean all dirt, grease and dusty or powdery residues by washing the area with an appropriate detergent
- Surface deficiencies, such as cracks and small holes, need to be be filled and sealed with a suitable filler and then sanded smooth
- Wash and clean the project area to remove any residue of dust with a suitable detergent, then rinse clean and allow to dry thoroughly
- Powdery surfaces need to be sealed with a suitable sealant, such as Sandtex Quick Drying Stabilising Solution
- It is recommended to coat porous surfaces with a mist coat comprising of Crown Trade Eggshell diluted with 40% clean water
- Polished surface need to be primed with a suitable primer, such as Crown Trade PX3 All Purpose Primer or Crown Trade PX4 All Purpose Primer if a water based primer is required
If being applied to a wooden surface, then the additional steps need to be applied:
- Wooden products that have oils/extractives require cleaning with methylated spirits, frequently changing the face of the cloth, and treat any knots with two coats of fresh knotting
- New wooden surfaces will need to be lightly sanded to provide a key for Crown Trade Eggshell to grip to and provide strong adhesion
- Any bare wood will need to be primed with a suitable wood primer followed by an undercoat before the application to ensure a strong bind to the surface
If being applied to a metal surface, then the following additional steps need to be applied:
- If being applied to new metal, excluding galvanised surfaces, then lightly abrade the surface, rinse clean followed by a coating of a metal primer
- On new bright galvanised surfaces, degrease the surface thoroughly and then pre-treat with a T wash solution, followed by applying a suitable metal primer
- Non ferrous metals require a coat of a suitable metal primer followed by an undercoat to help Crown Trade Eggshell adhere to the surface
- Ferrous metals need to be stripped back to their original state with the removal of all surface rust and millscale, then apply a single coat of a suitable metal primer followed by a coating of undercoat within the same working day
- If the metal surface has been previously decorated, ensure any rust is removed, the edges of the paint are feathered, and the area washed clean and finally wet abrade the surface, rinse and allow to dry. Then apply 1 coat of a metal primer followed by a single coat of undercoat to aid with adhesion
Always produce a test area ahead of the application to judge the suitability and final finish of the product. Follow the manufacturer's instructions at all times.
To ensure the regularity of colour throughout the application, ensure enough Crown Trade Eggshell for the project area, including a sufficient amount for touch-in at a later time
Avoid applying if the air or substrate temperatures are likely to be below 8°C or to exceed 80% humidity
- Mix and stir the paint, taking care to work through the bottom and edges of the tin to ensure an even distribution of the pigment within the paint
- Apply with a high quality roller for the walls and a good quality brush for cutting in the corners and around fixtures and fittings
- Use the wet edge technique when being applied by a brush
- If Crown Trade Eggshell is being applied by spray, then refer to the manufacturer's instructions for the recommended dilution ratio
- The normal finishing process requires 2 full coats of Crown Trade Eggshell, however this can vary and depends on the darkness of the surface
Cleaning
Painted surfaces can be washed with water and a liquid detergent or wiped with a damp cloth to eliminate surface scuffs and blemishes.
Maintenance
To preserve the finish, simply apply a fresh coat of Crown Trade Eggshell as required, following the Preparation and Application instructions above.
