Preparation
Preparation
To accomplish the best results the surface needs to be clean, structurally stable and free of dirt, dust and surface impurities.
- Remove all loose and defective paint by either using a paint scraper, paint stripper or sanding down the project area
- Special care should be taken if removing pre 1960s paint as this could contain harmful levels of lead
- Repair any defects such as cracks or holes with a suitable filler to produce a surface free of imperfections
- If necessary, sand the project area to produce a flat smooth surface
- If the project area shows signs of grease or oil, then wash with a suitable detergent and allow to dry thoroughly
- If using two or more tins from different batches, then blend the paint together in a large container to ensure a consistent hue and tone of colour
- Mask off the project area to protect the adjoining surfaces
- If Craig And Rose Artisan Concrete Effect is being applied onto either fresh plaster or a porous surface, then prime the area with a suitable primer, such as Craig And Rose 1829 All Purpose Undercoat
Application
Application
Always do a test area before starting any project to assess the suitability of the product and the finish. Use only in well ventilated areas.
- Practice the application technique on a large area beforehand, such as cardboard or a spare piece of board or wood
- It is advisable to work in small sections on the project area
- Initially, it is best to cut in around the edges with a paint brush
- Smooth the surface with a steel trowel in broad, sweeping strokes with the trowel at a 60 - 80 degree angle and ensure the trowel blade remains clean
- This process will need repeating over the entire project area to create a consistent coverage
- The standard procedure is to apply 3 coats following the above procedure, allowing a minimum of 4 hours drying time between coats. However, if the depth and appearance are to be increased then further coats can be applied
- Use a 600 grit sandpaper to apply a light polish once the final coat has dried but within 24 hours of the application
- It is optional, though advisable, to apply a further coating of a clear varnish to add an extra layer of protection to the concrete texture
Do not apply to highly to highly absorbent surfaces.
